Autistic children in mainstream schools

This week I observed one autistic girl in mainstream school. She is in year 2. She gets full ABA support in the school environment, but she still struggles with learning. Very often, autistic kids struggle in mainstream school.

I am not saying that mainstream school is not good for a child with needs, but we need to be very careful when considering which schools to apply to. This is because, the pace of learning, amount of information, limited processing time, and overwhelming environments can lead a child to be more fearful and anxious and cause more harm than good.

If you’re a parent and your child is struggling in their current school, seek out professional help. Don’t just wait it out with the hope that things will change.
